Week 5 – Monster dying sprite

Hi again! The last few days, I have been working on another sprite, and this time for when our monsters dies. I didn’t really know how to tackle this sprite at the start and I more or less just tried working it out as I went on. We had talked in the group about visualizing it by letting the monster sink in to the ocean and disappear. So at least I had something to go on and when doing the sprite. One idea that I had before staring to work on the sprite was to make the monster looked chocked when dying, like it comes as a surprise that it could actually die. For doing this sprite I was depending on our Lead Art, who got the task to draw the idle monster, to finish it up. When I eventually sat down to make the frames for the first gif, I wanted to change as little as possible of the original drawing, to not change the art style or the strokes. Since this is only one of several sprites for the monster, which more artists than me in the group are working on, I figured I had to keep the drawing as solid and close to the original as possible in each frame. So when working in Photoshop with the gif, I basically tried to use parts that already existed on the idle monster drawing, by cutting and pasting together the parts. After changing the different parts of the monster, which can sometimes look quite rough if you just cut and paste, I tried to make it more solid by drawing together everything to make it look smooth and as well constructed as the original monster. To put weigh on the monster being chocked over the death I made it’s eyes roll up and it’s mouth open wide.
Sketch of the monster When doing the first gif I showed it to the rest of the group, asking what they though about it and if I could somehow change it and make it better. I got positive feedback but that I could add even more movement, something I had thought about as well. So to make the sprite look even more alive I now tried to, besides the claws and the eyes, even make the tentacles move. I think this made the gif much more alive and gives more feeling to the death. Hopefully this will also work good together with the remaining sprites for the monsters. Final GIF  |
