Update report?

It was a long time since i last posted something here so i thought i should write something. I will mostly talk and show some of the things i have been working on in 3D. In 3D 2 we got an assignment to replicate a generator or an old wooden phone box from a picture. I chose the generator. The assignment was to do a lowpoly mesh with a polylimit of 6000, then a highpoly version that would make the normal map that would be projected onto the lowpoly, then also make materials for the objects and a scene it could all be in. All of this would be put in Unreal 4. So i decided that i would make a factory floor where the generator was being made, mostly by robot arms. To tell the truth i were more excited about making the robot arms than the generator itself. Making the highpoly was something new to me and not that easy at first, but it was fun and i learnt a lot doing it. One important thing to think about that i learned the hard way was that you should not have 90 degree angles as the projection of the normal map wont pick it up and you wont see the edge. So making the edge more unrealistic by pulling out the lower parts so they are more visible, makes it look more realistic on the projection. It was also a struggle to only have 2k resolution on the texture, because the normal map had to be edited manually at some points where it did not look good because of the resolution. And it’s not that easy when you just work with a picture that is mostly blue with some green and red in it. But yes the scene.
The generator was pulled apart into 3 versions, one as a whole, one as only the lower part that the generator is normally stuck on and then the generator alone. They all use the same texture so there would be no need to make more materials. The roof and the floor is the same texture, but two different materials, the roof is a little bigger and a different color that i blended the original diffuse texture with. Then on my free time i have been working on monster. It started with an idea to make the legs and have 4 of them, not the best start of a concept, but it worked. I mixed the “spider” like legs with and anglerfish and then this was born.
As we were working on rigging and skinning in 3D 3 class i also did that so i could train on doing that. The whole process was fun and i realised i kinda liked making monsters, so i will make more. Then i guess i will talk about what im working with for class right now, in the group assignment. The assignment is to make a character and work as a team in a pipeline. So i am making the 3D model, another the rigging, skinning and animation, and a third is doing the texturing. Well all of us will probably work on the animations. So for the next “check up” i’m supposed to have made a basemsh for the character. This is what i have right now.
It’s a little more then a base mesh but i have fun doing it so i just continue. The tris count right now is about 4k and the target is 9k so there is a lot left to do to make the shapes better and have better edgeflow. The biggest problem i have is the turban with all it’s folds, but i think it will look good in the end. Well i guess this is it for this time, i will try to do updates more frequent. |
