Dragon Song Blogpost 1

Concept Art

Dragon Song is a rhythmic game where you play as the only singing dragon. His world has been invaded by crystal entities and fire can not stop them. My main role in this project is to create art assets for the game. Right now my focus is to create a background for our first level.

The inspiration for this background comes mainly from our mood board.

The mood board consisted mainly of three landscape pictures. One with mountains, green islands and water, another with a large glowing tree that had kind of a cone shape tree top and the last image was of a light show party with white orbs hanging from the ceiling. What all three pictures had in common was that they seemed to take place in night time. I took inspiration from this and tried to keep the dominant colors from every image. The background is still only preliminary.

Designing the trees was the hardest part. I made several quick sketches and they all had the same core features, a glowing center top object, branches that all started at the same height and most of the branches should have white or glowing orbs hanging from them. I ended up with a flower looking construction where orbs can act like spores being released into the atmosphere. I really wanted the tree to feel alien, not part of our world, but part of the dragons world. So instead of going the usual green/brown I went for purple and a pale green/blue for the flower at the top. I also think that the orbs glowing in different colors right now might make it look a bit to much like a Christmas tree, but I’m afraid that if I change them all into the same color it would look to boring. The thought was that they are going to flash in rhythm with the beat of the music.

For the landscape I wanted something that could be easily looped, so an ocean seemed perfect since it always sticks to the horizon line and it would be easier to add more islands for a parallax scrolling background.

What needs to be done now is to start refining it. Right now I have only placed things in blocks to mark out where they need to be, so colors and lines are going to be cleaned up as well as changed.

I also want to add some sort of landmass to the left because I feel it is a bit unbalanced right now.
