Week 4, Game design

This is the 4th week of our group project and 3rd week using scrum. For those who are not familiar with the scrum method, it is a way of planning projects by breaking them down in to smaller parts and making weekly deadlines. This also helps noticing where problems start to stack up and where deadlines needs to be changed. The team using scrum estimates their work hours and then see how long it actually took when finished. This way more people can be assigned to the task in order make a deadline in time or unnecessary objects be cut out of the project in time. This is what we are doing right now.

The previous part of this course consisted of us making concept documents in the same groups. We are now creating another group´s game through their concept. This requires us to make a design document and make the game a finished product. As I mentioned we are 3 weeks in on our scrum and it takes some adjustment. To estimate work hours is very hard in the beginning so we have been exaggerating the first tasks to get a feel of estimating safely. This to make sure we don’t take on too much work and fail the deadlines. If you get done with all your work before deadline you just pick a new task and add it to your sprint plan, so no slacking.

This week my sprint plan contains Enemy Unit 1 walk animation, Enemy Unit 1 still art, Enemy Unit 2 still art, Enemy Unit 4 still art, Enemy base still art, Enemy Unit 1 skill animation. The total estimated work hours for my sprint is 25 hours out of the required  20. The reason for this is that I were sick last week and fell behind on my sprint plan. So the tasks I did not manage to finish in time was put into this weeks sprint plan with the estimated work hours minus the work i have already put in. So I don´t actually think it will take 25 hours all together, but I have the remaining hours from last week and will eventually put how long it actually took so that we can compare the estimated time versus the time it took.

My role in this group project is Game Designer. Since we are 3 graphics students and 2 programmers we all have to help each other out. So I am currently working on graphics. Here is some of my work so far, both concepts and finished objects.

Picture number one represents a card that represents a type of flower seed. Image number two is concept art for the enemy base. Picture number three are different concepts of our enemies. Picture number four is showing what our side bar for the cards might look like.

My choice in art style is based on the over all style that we agreed upon. My concepts are just for getting a feel in which direction we would like to go and then adapt them to our art style. My priority is to get as many diverse options possible in a short amount of time so that we easier can find a fitting option. Our concept had the name ”Green Warden” and is basically a tower defense game where the player plays as a Dryad defending the jungle against evil goblins that got industrialized and now wants to chop down trees and take over areas. Deadline for this weeks scrum is Monday so wish me luck!
