Two weeks in

After two weeks into our new game development course our group is getting some really good work done. Our programmers have started working on the code and we artists have started with creating the visual parts. Also the game design document is being written and sound effects and music is being searched for.

In this course we are creating a game from a finished concept document created by another group in the previous course. We were free to choose from all the other groups concept documents and decided to go with the game idea Magic Writers, which is a top down space shooter were you as a wizard defend a beach from evil monsters by throwing items at them. The items are spawned by typing the name of the item, for example “Skeleton”, and then aiming it at a monster. Each new monster that spawns is weak to different types of items and it is up to you to find that weakness and expose it. There were several reasons for choosing this concept document to work with. First of all, it seemed to be a fun and interesting game. Second, the concept document was very well thought out and clear. And lastly, it was a game that felt suitable in terms of difficulty for the programmers and artist.

On this project I am the lead art, which means I am responsible for deciding upon a style for the game and creating clear guidelines so that we artists create art assets in the same style. I have during these two weeks mainly been working on finding an art style fitting with the concept. We decided to go with a cartoon style since the game is marketed towards kids and it fits the theme. I have also started creating assets like backgrounds, monsters and the main character.

We have during this week started using Scrum to plan our work schedule and divide work between us. What this means basically is that you list all your features, assets and code that need to be implemented and give each of these a priority level. Then each member of the team gets a set of tasks every week and after every week you review what has been done. We also change who manages these meetings every week so that everyone gets an understanding of how the system Scrum works.

To summarize, we have been doing good progress and I feel we have planned quite well according to the time given to us. Attached is a picture of our main monster in the game.
