Lighting of character

Its been a little break with the blog posts over Christmas and new year but now i’m back and I will try to write at least one post per week.

I had an assignment over the Christmas break to create light and forms in my character. It was a big challenge for me personally because I have never lighted a character or painted this seriously.

But given it is my first time ever doing something like this I am very pleased with the result. The hardest thing about this character was finding the patience to actually finish it. After I found a way to create the light over the character it was quite simple to paint even if it took time.

At the beginning I decided on a point in the picture that was my light source and then I tried to adapt the shadows angle accordingly. After this was done I did not have much time until the picture was supposed to be handed in. Therefore the environment that was supposed to be part of the character got painted rather quickly and does not look very good in my opinion.

I am sure I did not use a very effective method when i painted this. My method was to paint each part of the character individually and then try to apply light that was reflected from each part of the body correctly. This lead to a lot of repainting and a lot of frustration when one small part looked bad and then I had do re-do the entire part.

For example I think i re-did the shoulder-pads at least five times before I got satisfied enough. I know there is better tools in Photoshop that can be used when creating shadows and stuff, but I do not know these tools and therefore the result is this.

That was my thoughts on this assignment. And now I think that the assignments with our characters are finished and that we will be starting on some new project.
