2D-Graphics, Theory and Application I – Christmas break

So, with Christmas break not much has been happening these last few weeks. I did however get started on one of the final assignments for the course, the values assignment. Our assignment was to take a lineart and render our character in greyscale in a setting drawn in correct linear perspective. I thought about using the lineart I made for the previous assignment but it seemed to suggest an outdoor setting and I wanted to work with a more defined, controlled space so I made a new one with the old lineart and the turn-around as references.

It is not a perfectly clean lineart since I wanted to be able to play with composition and move things around until they seemed right. Constructing the space, the character and cleaning up the lineart took most of the time. After that I started filling out the base colors, choosing to make the foreground the darker part and the background (closer to the window), lighter.

This is where it’s all at at the moment. What I’m working on now is deciding the angle at which the light should fall through the window and start adding the hard light and shadow to the proper areas. With four days left until deadline I’m starting to feel kind of quesy about the details, the folds in all that fabric and how to properly convey textures but eh, it’s going to be fine.

Until next time!

EDIT:

Here’s the finished half-finished version. Since my posts now link to my Facebook I didn’t feel happy enough with the piece to showcase it I didn’t want to spam people. Ahem.

I think this could have turned out pretty well if I hadn’t maybe avoided dealing with it for so long and had more time. Toward the end of the deadline I just kind of wanted to throw up on it a little and being able to put it aside and pick it up again later would have helped me to render it with the amount of detail it deserved so I guess on my part this goes as a half-finished piece I’ll eventually return to rather than something I’m happy with.

Luckily I got more time for this project and here’s an updated, refined version! I really like how the muscles on her arm and shoulder came out in this one.

I did learn alot, especially regarding the folds in the fabric in the light part of the picture even though the lighting is kind of illogical and inconsistent if you look at it.

After having worked exclusively in greys for a while I really wanted to get my hands on something colorful so I did a 5-minute design of a medallion or something of that ilk.
