First week! Space Invaders and D&D!
The first school week has come to an end, though I’ll probably be looking into more stuff this weekend. We were at the beginning of the week assigned to analyse the retro game Space Invaders and describe its different objects with properties, behaviors and relationships. We were supposed to look at it in a perspective as a designer, and I must admit I was struggling a bit. I have been coding for a couple of years now and I can’t really […]

Hello all, I recently begun studying Game design and graphics at Uppsala University, Campus Gotland. This will be my blog documenting the work I’ll be doing during the next two or three years time, hopefully it will be interesting!
During this week we’ve mostly had introductory lectures. The two courses we’re reading right now are Written and spoken communication and Game design and analysis. In the latter we were tasked to play Space Invaders and to analyse what objects the game […]

Hello there fellow Internet user!
My name is Sven Almberg and I have just started studying Game Design And Programming at Uppsala Uni, Campus Gotland. It’s the first time I’ve ever been to Gotland and I must say it is incredibly beautiful here, it really went way past my expectations. I grew up in a small village in Sweden… or I should say 4 kilometers outside the village… in the middle of nowhere. Though the surroundings there is beautiful I must say that Gotland and Visby […]

The Third Dimension
After a summer lost in the uncharted wilds of Nyköping, I have finally returned to school to start studying again. This time, I will venture into the third dimension, learning to work in 3ds Max.
Our first assignment using the software was to make a mock-up environment that could fit into a game of our choice (we picked ‘Journey’). We would then chose a key word (in our case ‘solitude’) from a list, and try to somehow use that word to […]

First week of 3D, Analysis
A picture analysis with the help of some “elements of art”
Evil within Line: Most of the lines are vertical by looking at the trees, this gives us a feeling of inferiority. For example if we have to look up towards something or someone we feel small, things that are above us tend to feel more powerful. This can be seen through pictures taken of a person from a down-top perspective. We can also see that the tree branches […]

New semester = 3D-modeling and other cool stuff
The summer is over and the second year has just started. This semester I will start learning 3D and I’m so freaking excited!
This first week we’ve been analysing screenshots with focus on the elements of art, such as Line, Shapes, Space, Value, Colour and Texture. I must tell I haven’t played any of these games, which gives me a fresh look at these pictures.
The first screenshot is from Batman.
Line: the camera is tilted and the lines are diagonally, which […]

Homework; Image analysis and 3Ds max assignment
Batman
Lines: There are several diagonal lines going through the image, and this creates the overall impression of movement and action.
Shapes: the shapes give off an impression of being man-made, in that they are mostly controlled and square. The shapes of batman are a mash of nature meets technology in boxy versus curved shapes.
Space: Batman is the positive space in the image, his silhouette makes out the foreground. The spaceship is the neutral ground. The flying bats help to indicate […]

Week 1.
Monday 01/09 I was formally accepted as a student to uppsala university campus gotland.
It’s been incredibly educational only in the first week, which has consisted of the creation of dungeons and dragons characters, and the analysis of systems. The DnD character generation system is, to a beginner, complex but offers a wide range of adaption to outside input. One character might be useful for one situation, and another one completely useless. It all depends on the numbers that the system […]

Here we go
Hi!
I’m Anders Hagström and this blog is intended to be the ongoing chronicle of my work as a game design student at GAME, the Department of Game Design at Campus Gotland.
I am a music producer since 15 years and I decided to study Game Design when I composed the music and made the sound FX for the critically acclaimed iOS game Darkin. A huge game nerd since the 90s making music for a game was an awesome experience but I […]

The first assignments, done and done!
Assignments:
Analyze the exciting game ‘Space Invaders’.
Learn how do generate a character in the roleplaying game ‘D&D 5th Edition’.
The first written assignment is about breaking down the game into objects, and the objects properties. And of course the relations between all of the objects.
Some examples of objects in that game is: Player Craft (The ship you are playing), Enemy crafts (The ships that are trying to kill you) and the missiles you are shooting etc.
And the property-section of the assignment is […]
