New subject and tons of stress!

Hello oh you, blog!

I am currently in my 4th week of my first 2D course.

So far so good, it has been both fun and incredibly hard! As someone who never sat down and really tried to learn how to draw this is so frustrating…Past attempts have been similar to: *Bing, I want to learn how to draw, lets draw!* Then I sit down, try to draw some extremely fancy awesome looking drawing and it ends up being nowhere near the amazing image I had in my mind prior to starting.

This phenomena is however extremely common for anyone ever wanting to draw, and every book I dig into to learn more about the subject states this over and over.

You can’t become a decent drawer without blood, sweat and tears being spilled. So far I have spilled them all *cough* papercut *cough*…  And I haven’t gotten far at all, but there is progress!

So the first week was life drawing, we learned to draw gesture drawings, proportions, cylinders and all that jazz to get started with nailing basic forms down, with the aid of a totally unexpected nude model. It was incredibly fun and totally not awkward at all, which I thought it would be!

Second week was perspective drawing, this was something of a initial struggle, but eventually after reading the excellent book by David Chelsea – Perspective drawing for comic book artists. It became quite easy… Easy, but incredibly slow in my end. (Excluding the issues with getting ellipses down correctly in perspective, but that is coming in the weeks ahead, I’ve been told.)

Third week was constructing a character and making a turn-around (Something you see often when modeling characters in Maya from a concept). So, this was probably the biggest frustrations I’ve ever felt in my entire life, but boy was it a true learning experience! The character I drew doesn’t look professional in any way, but you can almost see it as being a character of some sort and not some squiggly lines looking like a drawing from kindergarten.

And this week we have line-art, essentially finishing up the character we designed last week. I’ll probably post pictures after this is done here on the blog to show how far I’ve gotten as of yet. Do not expect anything grandeur though!

Morgan out!
