Assignment 2 Update (week 6)

A Ciborium

The object I made for Assignment 2 is a Ciborium from the 15th – 16th century. A ciborium is a container for consecrated waffles. The container is hexagonal and each side have different religious pictures on them. The “roof” of the box have two different root textures, one with a cross pattern and one with a circular plate pattern. On top of the roof there is a cross with a crucified Jesus on it.

The light in the booth where the object was exhibited was very dim and the object was far back in the booth. This made it very difficult to get good reference pictures.

The decisions I made

Due to the bad quality of my reference pictures I had to prioritise some things things above others. Since I only had one example of the pictures on the sides of the container, and no clues as to what it might be, I decided to use the same texture for all sides. I tried to make it feel less repeating by changing some details on each side, however I now realise that I should have made bigger differences because it is easy to miss the ones I did.

I also decided to make the same texture for all sides of the roof. Because of the bad pictures I had I soon realised that I would have to make a new texture for the roof, the one on the picture was beyond salvaging, the light was too special. I couldn’t find any resembling texture for the cross pattern so I chose to use the circular pattern all over.

Pretty much all other textures on the model is made from  textures found on the internet. Some textures are re used on several places. Here is my three maps:

Diffuse map

This is the map I spent most time on and it is a collage of several different pictures and textures. I think i managed to make them stick together pretty good.

Specular map

The specular map is pretty much a black and white copy of the diffuse map although I changed the value of a lot of things to make sure they turned out as shiny as I wanted them too.

Normal map

For this assignment I went for a very simple normal map. I used a black and white version of the diffuse map and removed most of the details from the places that should be flat. It is hard to see on this image but I tried to make sure that some of the scratches in the texture where left on the normal map so that the object wouldn’t look too smooth.
