My First Jam – Mayes Runner!

Hello fellow readers! 🙂 Late post again, and I have to apologize for that. I promise I will be better at this, but for this time, and the last time, you will get a double post. My First Jam is a tradition at UU, Campus Gotland where first, second and third year students join up in teams to make a fully playable game in a couple of hours. The time you get to spend on the game varies from Jam to Jam, depending on the rules. This time we had from 10 A.M. until 6 P.M. So I joined up with two guys which are first year students, 2 guys which are second year students and one guy who is a third year student. We were a fairly splitted team. There were three programmers and me and the other two are studying graphics. We met at 10 A.M. to receive information about the assignment. The theme were: Addiction X. We got to work immediately and the ideas were flowing. Finally we decided to make our game about our teacher in game design, Adam Mayes! Simply you were playing Mr. Mayes, running from students in the school corridors to avoid correcting the assignments. If you were caught, the tests had to be corrected. Of course the game was all in good fun, and we hope people saw the fun in it too. Somehow I believe they did, because we won the prize ”Most Fun” which I felt really proud of. I think there were 22 teams, and 3 awards you could win, Best Interpretation, Best Execution and Most Fun. The addiction in our game were coffee beans. Adam Mayes had to eat coffee beans in order to gain speed and dash away for a few seconds. Jumping over obstacles is what you have to do to win the level, at the same time you have to avoid students coming from the other direction in a paper plane. The threat is everywhere! A big thanks to the team I had my first jam with, they made it really fun, and REALLY learning. It is not so bad to win a prize at your first game jam either 😉 I will finish with a couple of pictures. Until next time, take care! /Adam
