Narrative challenge

During the past week, I’ve been working on a narrative challenge that our teacher gave us. The challenge was basically to randomly generate a story or plot and then use it as a basis for a game. I used an online generator that I love, called Writing Exercises.

The random plot points I got were these:

  • a foolish 21-year-old woman
  • a cruel 40-year-old woman
  • the story begins on a farm
  • someone recieves an inheritance
  • it’s a story about freedom
  • your character takes control of the situation

The game I designed is a story-driven simulation game. You play as Lisa Freeman, whose father recently died, giving her the leadership of his farm. However, since Lisa is still young her step-mother Camilla takes care of the farm for now. You have to prove yourself to Camilla in order to gain full control of the farm. You do this by investing, planting and harvesting crops and expanding the farm with new buildings.

That’s basically it! I had to make a pitch document, which was kind of hard since I’ve never done that before. Other than that, I think it turned out alright. Narrative is one of the things I love the most in games, so this was a fun challenge.
