Week 3 & 4: The Workshop
|
The previous weeks we have mainly been working with creating games. During the third week me and my assigned group were tasked to create a game based on a random concept given to us by the teacher. Our concept was that the player is a reporter in a war, and cannot use weapons or violence in completing their missions. We ended up with the idea of the setting being in a war between France and Spain. The player, as the reporter, has to venture into war torn cities and talk to people and collect intelligence about the situation. Gameplay involved sneaking around enemies, using a dialogue system to talk to citizen and bribing guards. In the fourth week we were told to, in the group we were last assigned, come up with an already existing digital game, and make a paper prototype of it, where the gameplay reflected the core experience one would get from the original game. Our game of choice was Worms and the core experience we chose to focus on was that of skillful use of artillery, planning and use of the wind mechanic. The wind mechanic decides the trajectory of certain projectiles and may allow for or negate certain plays. Contrary to the original, digital game, we went with a top-down perspective as opposed to the side-scrolling one, because the destructable invironment that is a staple of the Worms series would be very time-consuming to replicate in a board game. We instead went with the Chess-like approach so we didn’t have to worry about that aspect and instead focus on moving the pieces around the board. |
