Textures

I finally finished the texture for my post apocalyptic crate! I pretty much have not changed my original design at all, since my first sketch. I did remove the fallout shelter symbol on the box, since it did not really make any sense and was just a cheap way of saying “hey, this is post apocalyptic and stuff”. I kept going with the beaten-up and worn look that I think fits in a post apocalyptic setting. I also added a waybill on the lid, to give it some more interesting details. It encourages the idea that the box has been on the move, literally being sent across the country, maybe even plundered from a post office during a riot. The near-broken look also makes the box look breakable. Maybe it could contain some relic from a far away land, that is revealed to the player as shes smashes it?

The complexity of the duct tape have cost me many hours of extra work. However, I considering the final output, the time put into it was worth it. The duct tape could have been skipped, or made purely with textures. But the duct tape is the only thing that actually brings the rugged and worn look to the models silhouette. I was also informed of more effective ways of adding the duct tape rather than stitching it on, but since I was already underway with this method, I thought I might as well continue with it.

PostApocBoxSketch

I went for an analogue color scheme for this box. Since it would most likely not be a very important object, but rather a piece of the background that the player might possibly want to interact with for something trivial, the colors should not make the box stand out that much, but blend in. In an analogue color scheme, the colors have minimum contrast, which means they probably wont attract that much attention.

I also made the colors very unsaturated, again mainly to avoid taking the players attention too much. but also because the grey, yellow dusty colors go well with the apocalyptic wasteland theme. Clear saturated colors would doubtlessly break the believably if seen on objects that are supposed to be rugged and decaying.

The colors I used are mainly yellow-orange and a little red. I wanted the colors to be warm, to fit into part of a dusty barren, almost desert environment. The dominant color is orange, with red and yellow as its secondaries. For some time I thought about giving the yellow color more space , but I think this is good, I think more yellow would just make it look weird. I decided to put the yellow color to the duct tape and orange to the box. First off, I think red/orange on the duct tape would  be confusing, as it would not really look like duct tape any more. The yellow on the other hand, just makes it look old and dusty. I’m also thinking that the surrounding environment would probably be some sort of yellow, and I think making the entire box yellow could it make look a bit monotone to the background. However, that is just a theory.
