Sissyfight, Mechanics, Dynamics and last but not least, Aesthetics.

Good evening world!

I must apologize for the lack of updating, but the last week has been crazy at school. To summarize, we got an assignment, to play the game Sissyfight. When we learned the game, we were supposed to change the game into our own version, by changing the mechanics we changed the dynamics. But first let me explain the term ”MDA”

  • Mechanics: The particular components of the game, at the level of data representation and algorithms. So, mechanics are the rules and concepts that formally specify the game system.
  • Dynamics: The run-time behavior of the game-as-system. So, dynamics describes the run-time behavior of the mechanics acting on player inputs and each others’ outputs over time. The dynamics automatically change if the mechanics are changed.
  • Aesthetics: The desirable emotional responses evoked in the player, when she interacts with the game system. Aesthetics can easier be referred to as ”fun”. Sch, never use that word. In the design world the words to replace the word fun is:
  1. Sensation – Game as sense-pleasure.
  2. Fantasy – Game as make-believe.
  3. Narrative – Game as drama.
  4. Challenge – Game as obstacle course.
  5. Fellowship – Game as social framework.
  6. Discovery – Game as uncharted territory.
  7. Expression – Game as self-discovery.
  8. Submission – Game as pastime.

So that is the basics of what we covered this week. But this is just ”scratching the surface”. It goes much deeper than this, trust me on that one 🙂.

Now back to the assignment. After we learned the board game Sissyfight, our second assignment was to make a different game, with different fiction and mechanics. We thought we were done when we got a memorandum, a text that told us what we needed to change with the game. This was our third assignment. (Needless to say, this is a group assignment.) The memorandum said;

”Just got back from our Haunted House 2 pitch, and our last demo tanked. Luckily, Moe mentioned we had this concept called Sissyfight, and the publisher loved it. Literally fell out of her chair laughing.

I don’t know if it’s really that funny, so please see what you can do to makae sure it lives up to her expectations.¨

Come up with a way for Sissyfight to tie in to the movie license. Remember, it has to be funny.

Also, we need Eddie Murphy in the game as a character, but you can’t make it so he loses. That’s all his manager said. Not sure what that means.”

So  we had two hours to adapt the game so it would work with this memorandum we received, and we did.

Tomorrow, we will bring the rules so another group can play our different version of  Sissyfight, and our group can play another groups version of Sissyfight. I am really looking forward to this, it will be awesome!

Sorry for the long text, but I hope you found it educating 🙂

Kind regards,

Adam
