Small Things That Matter
|
Greetings! Today I will discuss some of the choices we as a group have made. That along with some of the artifacts I’ve completed this week. Our game has a very winding map that, we noticed, is extremely boring to walk through when you’ve already killed all the mobs or walking back from a boss fight. To fix this we threw some ideas around and tried to find something nice and simple just to get the character more engaged even when there is no mobs to kill. One thing we’ve had from the beginning of our game making was the annoying part of re-spawning at the start of the map when you die, but all the mobs you killed are still dead. That means you have to walk all the way back, winding through empty rooms doing nothing. Not very enjoyable. So we decided to get some checkpoints implemented. A small fix, but a good one. So I made a very simple art of a checkpoint-point, illustrated as a button that lights up when you activate it. It was some very quick work that fills its purpose. So that fixed the boring “walking back after dying-” part, but what about going back after having killed a boss? Well, we have been discussing some solutions for that one of which is having some sort of teleport device in each boss room. And also… eggs! Eggs, yes, simple eggs. everyone want to destroy stuff from time to time, so I made some art for eggs. Just lying randomly around the map there will be eggs that you are able to destroy by shooting at them. Just another small simple fix for something as boring as walking. Maybe it will be a bit repetitive after a while, but then again the game won’t take THAT long to finish. So yes, some simple eggs that you can wreak havoc upon. Also made very quick just to fill its purpose and not take my time off of other more important artifacts. But wait, there is more! We currently have two types of mobs in-game. One that charges at you, and one that shoots. We now add the small annoying one that follows you and is nothing but cannon fodder. That mob type, just as the egg, is there to have something to shoot at, and distract you from the fact that you might have to walk a long while. There mobs will re-spawn and annoy you even more if you get back to the places you have been before. These three things are all small but all share the same purpose, fleshing out the game and preventing a hideous amount of boring downtime. Elegant in its simple form I would say. Haha. “Go ahead, make my day” |
