Backgrounds and .. Movies?

So; What’s been going on this week?
Background, mostly.

I knew that we needed a Win/Lose screen, so I took it upon myself to create some.

I started out checking some resources. Old Soviet propaganda was my first thought, as the main character is a russian spy in Langley, Virginia (At the CIA’s Headquarters).

I then started drawing up a concept for the ‘Win’-screen. I chose a font with a cyrillic vibe to it, and printed the Russian National Anthem in the background. Below is the concept I came up with:

But, well, while I do like the concept.. It doesn’t fit with our game. Sure, you could say contrast is a good thing, but as we don’t use much colour (Just a few in the menu’s and some low-saturation ones in-game) this clashed too much with the overall feel. So I thought.. Why not make a darker version? But after some thinking.. I decided against it. ”It wouldn’t feel russian”, I thought to myself.

So, after som re-thinking, I went with the design below instead. A guy, tipping his has, as if saying ”Thanks for the easy grab”, smiling mockingly, with the Soviet symbol in the background.

After som feedback, saying ”Well, if the light is coming from behind, then that should show on the person” I added some intense white. Here was the result:

But I wasn’t really pleased with the white outline, and I thought the Soviet symbol stood out a bit much.. So I removed all of the colour, and the white outlines, from the picture, to just give it a small indication that it’s russians we’re dealing with.

Then, being semi-pleased with the victory-background, I went on and created the ”Game-over”-background.  As the player can only lose by being shot and killed by the guards, I decided that I wanted that to be in the picture. The result we this picture:

But, well, I did not like the floor. At all. Too bright, and the pattern hurt my eyes just looking at it. Also, the fedora (hat) had too dark highlights. I also got some feedback saying that the door should either stick out, or into, the wall and that the blood looked too fake. So after some adjustments; This is what I came up with:

I’m overall pleased with what I’ve created. There’s still a few things that needs adjusting (The legs on the game-over screen and the grey patch near the character’s face on the victory-screen) but as they are to be done by monday; That won’t be a problem.

Thank’s for reading, I just want to share one more thing.
We had a task to create an Animatic in our parallel Graphics course.. So I’ve been working on a very rough one. It’s attached below:
