The Sound of “sort of-” Music

Greetings! Better late then never I suppose.

I spent this week working on the music for the game. And wasn’t that an experience, for a moment I really thought I had gone over my head with it all.

To be honest I’ve never been especially musically talented nor have I ever made my own music. So as you could probably tell this was a challenge from the beginning, and even much more so as the genre we have gone for is Jazz. And Jazz is a very free music genre, it is created by giving the musician free rains of what to do. That complicated things for me.

To start off I listened to a lot of Jazz, and many different types of it, just trying to find the right sound. On a side note I do actually listen to Jazz on my free time from time to time, so I had an idea of what the music I would make would have to sound like. That alone though is not really enough, I could get a good rhythm and beat from it, but just because I had the time and could I went on to look up some Jazz scales.

Apparently Jazz uses scales from the middle-ages! I found that a really interesting read, and they were quite simple as well. Just hard to master I guess. But I didn’t just read about the scales, I listened to them as well. I’m extremely thankful for the internet when it comes to things like this. I searched and found a lot of nice videos showing some scales and other little tricks. Both piano and Sax.

Here’s how it has gone so far:

For the first music I’ve ever made I would say it isn’t too bad. There are definitely things I want to improve and mess around with. But it all comes down to time, since there are other artifacts needing to be completed. Hopefully I will have some time after everything and just polish on what I have, since what I have will do for now.

Overall it has been an interesting experience. I ran in to trouble along the way, such as picking wrong plug-ins for Fruity Loops, having to re-do it and so on. But I’ve learned things and come out with a product. And the more important thing to all this, research before you take on something, because I feel like I could have put this week to better use. But things are as they are and you have to make the best of it, and so I did.
