Game Project Week 7 – Textures

So it’s week 7 of our game project and it’s time for another blog post, this week I have continued my work on the graphics for the rooms. We decided to go for another texture for the walls because its resolution was too low and some of the details on the texture were a bit blurry, due to that I started this week by making a new texture. You can see a comparison of the old and new texture further down on the page.

I started by adding the different lines on to the main texture, on one picture that Ludwig found, which I recall was on CGTextures. This change wasn’t too hard to make however I needed to make the texture seamless so I could overlap the texture and this caused me some problems.

I used Photoshop’s offset function filter > other > offset… to overlap the texture, then smoothed out the edges using the clone brush at a very low hardness. I was able to get it to work well on the horizontal axis, however not on the vertical axis. I got an edge were the texture was supposed to overlap but I wasn’t able to get it to look accurate. After some effort I got a result that I think I might be able to fix later with the clone brush when I have placed it, although it’s not an optimal solution yet I think I will be able to make it work in the end. I’m not quite sure why this issue appeared only in the vertical axis, nevertheless I feel that my knowledge of Photoshop is getting better day by day.

I made the texture into a brush and started placing the texture. I made a file in Photoshop that had the same dimensions of our entire game world and then placed out the rooms and placed the texture over the layout that was created earlier. I chose to do it through this method because aligning the textures room by room would be difficult and time consuming.

Even though I had to redo most of the work I did last week I didn’t feel that my work last week was a waste of time. I now have a clearer image of how the finished product will look like and I feel more comfortable in moving forward with the graphics. And I think the new texture looks a lot better.

The old one to the left and new one to the right if that was unclear.

That was all for this week, see you next week.
