Playground Panic map and sprites

This week I’ve been mostly working on the map background for the game. I also made a sprite for the male player character and a quick placeholder one for the basic enemy. This is the entire map as it is right now. background

although not finished, it’s good enough for the alpha. I will add more stuff to it later, like some swings, more details like muddy footsteps and maybe some scattered toys. to make it look like a kindergarten playground. And fix the roof, right now the tiles is only a placeholder texture. I’m also going to shrink the sandbox a little, its as big as the house right now.

I added some solar panels to the roof because I felt that it needed some color variation. I thought about roof windows and maybe a chimney, but then I got the solar panel idea and I thought it looked better than a window. and it’s a nice touch I think, instead of just an empty roof. It makes it look a little bit modern to and I think that fits in well with the sponge rifles, I just get the feeling that this is set just slightly in the future, I mean I don’t see any sponge rifle’s around today, but maybe that’s just me.

The entire map consists of 9 1080p images so it’s pretty huge. That’s because you only see a small portion of it at any given time. Most of it will be outside the screen edges and will scroll under you as you move around the map. And I wanted it to look good when you play the game on a 1080p monitor. If I made the entire map smaller, for example just one 1080p image it would look all pixelated when you scaled it up in game.  The red box below is one 1080p screen and it’s what you see as the player. it simply wouldn’t look good if you scale it up to be as big as the entire map.

Here is the male player character.Sprite2maleHe doesn’t have any legs here because those will be animated in a layer under him. He will have two walk animations, one for moving forward and backwards, and one for strafing. The rifle looks more like a toy gun now which is nice. I basically just changed the color of it to make it look plastic, and it worked out great i think.

Next week I will go over the same stuff again, add details to the map, make the female character sprite and make more kid sprites.
