More animations and this time DEATH!

Hello again!

It’s Thursday and this means it’s time for a new blog post!

I have kept working with animations this week and this time I have focused on death animations. I went in knowing I would probably have great trouble with making this animation work because I needed to take the character from standing up to lying on the ground. So I decided that making two animations would be enough. I ended up making the death animations for our melee enemy and our ranged enemy.

This is the Sprite that will spawn when the main character hits something with its attack.

I sat down and discussed with Nils how I should make the death animation because I was so unsure of how I could make it good looking with my skill base. We talked about different kinds of animations that I could do but finally we decided that i should make the melee enemy standing holding his head with stars circling around his head because we are going with a comical art style and it would be easier to animate because we have a “pow” sprite that will spawn when the player hits something. So I didn’t have to animation anything except the starts circling around his head. Witch saved a lot of work hours I had planned for the animation.

I had a different approach when working with the ranged enemy. I wanted to do something different then I did with the melee enemy and I believed I had the time even though this was a high risk assignment because I could always just use the same animation I did for the melee enemy if it didn’t work out.

I wanted this one to lie down on the ground and grasp his hand up towards the sky. This gave me a lot of trouble because after making a sketch and adding color and shadows it looked more like the character was standing up and it was rather flat. So after showing the picture to Nils and talking some about how I could fix this I decided to make it look like he was lying with one of his legs under him and adding shadows around the character as well as changing the shadows I had before. The problem now was it started to look like he was running happy towards someone, like in cheesy movies.

Picture 02 20

This is how the picture looks right now when i am writing this blog, as you can see it looks like he is running with his hands out stretch.

I could not use this as a base so I showed the picture to Nils again and asked him what he thought and if I should redo the whole thing or not. He said that I should try to make one of the arms look disfigured so this is what I will try to make tomorrow to then finish it during the weekend or tomorrow. And if all fails I will put the project of freeze and make a copy of the melee enemy’s death animation in till later in the project where we will have time to polish art that we have.

In till next week!
