Board game meeting #1-2

So now that all groups have analyzed game systems, board games and table top RPGs, we are all supposed to make a board game.
During our first meeting the group with the group we came with a some what aesthetic goal of paranoia vs trust and fear in a fight for survival in a cave.

Board Game Development Thoughts

My team has now begun working on a board game design. We haven’t gotten very far, we’ve mainly settled on a theme and some core concepts for the game. It’s going to be a kind of mix between Settlers and Drakborgen; we love the very risky and unpredictable exploration in Drakborgen and we want to combine that with the resource gathering and building of Settlers. We also want the friendly competition feeling you get from Settlers, where players can sabotage […]

The Alumni Days 2013

We moved the Alumni Days to much earlier in the semester, from its traditional spot close to christmas. There was two reasons for this:
First, we got a great opportunity to inform and inspire our third year students about their thesis work and internships that’s coming up in the spring semester. By inviting GAME-alumni to share their experiences and tips we hope to provide lots of insight while there’s still time for our students to act on […]

GameJam 2013 ”Everybody is a noob”

An activity becoming more and more common in the game developer industry are so called Game Jams. For those who don’t know what such are, the concept of Game Jams is to, over a varying (but generally rather short) time, create a game and compete with others over which is best in certain categories. This can be done either in teams or individually. During this years alumni days, we had such an event. The theme of it was ”Everybody is […]

Sketch Dump 3 + Portrait Sketch Process

For last two weeks I’ve mostly practised poses through the use of various croquis website I found on sycra.net which has probably the best resource page for artists ever. Additional thanks to Sycra for the paper texture.

How do you keep yourself from being totally useless in a group ?

Gosh it’s been a while, I can feel I got a few great posts I need to write down.
Lets try writing this one down and we’ll go back as soon as I find some time =)
About 7 years ago I was taught something called Problem-Solving-Preceptive.
P.S.P was a innovative way of showing how people can tackle problems quicker and get your work done.
You are presented to solve your problems with seven really stressful steps in order to find the problem, tackle […]

Post Mortem – Guns of Icarus (The Board Game)

Introduction
I worked with a group of people creating a board game paper prototype of Guns of Icarus. Guns of Icarus is a high paced, strategy FPS based on zeppelin combat, it’s a very interesting concept and designing a paper prototype of it was really interesting.
We wanted to focus on teamwork which also is the focus of Guns of Icarus which lead to us keeping the role system of the original game, requiring each zeppelin to fly with a pilot, a […]

GameJam

So today we had a GameJam.
Starting at 11:00 we got the words “Doom” & “Everyday”
18:00, 7 Hours later the game based on these word was to be handed in.
Using Gamemaker, a program thats most likely very easy to use… if you know how to…
But now the Challange was to Learn the program AND make a game within the time limit.
We started in my groupe (Andreas Wetter, Christina Ahrén and ofc me)
Quite Fast we got the idea to use a […]

Board game

Two days ago we finally agreed upon the aesthetic goals of the board game that we are creating. We also began working on the wiki-page that we are going to use for the project. If we manage to get the game as we want it to be I believe it will be exciting. Since we don’t have that many details about the game ready yet I’m not going to write about it here, but instead I’m going to write a […]

Adventures in multithreading

In our current course “Advanced C++ for games 2″ we have been working on a software rendering engine using windows GDI were no other abstraction layer or libraries are used. The latest feature is to implement and understand multi-threading, so for this we received the following homework:

Move all state data from WinMain into Globals class.

Basically, a lot of initialization and temporary variables are still in the main function which was moved into a Singleton class “Globals”. Simple.

Implement background worker threads […]

At the edge of a Heartbreak

Thus we gather to make vidya. Heartbreak and edge are the words of our challange and the making of shoot ‘em up games our arena.
The word edge is pretty fun to play with since it can mean a lot of things;
the edge of a blade
the edge of a chasm
the edge of sanity
the edge I hold over mortal men
to edge forward
at the edge of a great war
at the edge of town
2 edgy 4 u?
and the list goes on… quite a lot […]
