Week 42 review

This week we made our first prototype of our game. We focused heavily on or two goals; to have an interesting exploring mechanic and to generate a race for resources between players.
Originally we had an idea that was very focused around a cave. This week however we scaled most of that back in order to get base level systems we can test on their own merit. This has made our system much more modular, the theme of exploring as part […]

Story telling

Board game progress report (Advanced Game Design) – 201301018

Today my group had a short meeting where we discussed what was done during the week, and talked about what we needed tog get done by the next week. The things that we came up with was that we needed a more polished board (as someone brought up some problems with it during playtesting), item cards implemented into the game, and a way to improve the monster’s movement.
During this upcoming weekend, I’m going to test some ideas of how to […]

Why so serious?

So today I meet up with my serious game course group in order to finalize our concept document. This went well, mostly due to the work that had already been put into it and tomorrow we will present the topic and concept for this game.
So what is it? (I hear you say)
The topic of the serious game is heath care. The game more specific takes the problem with the waiting time in the emergency department waiting rooms, since the patients […]

Developing a boardgame

Hey again, a lot of things has happened since my first post. We’re currently developing a boardgame as our assignment in advanced gamedesign and it’s tough but fun.
The boardgame we’re making currently doesn’t have a name or proper theme yet. As we had our first meeting brainstorming ideas for this assignment we all agreed on making a survival game. We figured using a already existing boardgames board as a base would be a good idea, we picked up the […]

The board game project

It all began when our group decided over Skype that we should meet last Sunday (2013-10-13).
During this first meeting, if one could even call it that. It was more of a brainstorming session where we tried to figure out what the player should feel when playing our game, the aesthetic and some other factors like how fast it would be to play, if it should be complex, etc.
The criterias the game should meet were:

Fast paced

Competitive

Simple

The aesthetics that we decided for:

Snowballing

Blaming

Bluffing

So […]

My programming journey at Gotland.

Lets write a blog post about programming as a variation to all my writings about game design.
Before I started studying at Gotland University (which was merged into Uppsala University earlier this summer), I had programmed in high-school for two years in Java. Among the things I wrote there was an Asteroids game, a game of the Swedish card game Vändåtta with network code (although you had to know the IP for that, so no MMO game) and a game where […]

Board game progress report (Advanced Game Design) – 20131017

Today was a play-testing day, where the different groups in the course was play-testing each others’ games. We had a total of three groups playing our game in it’s current state. Overall, people seemed to like our movement system and that the monster in the game was only revealed each fourth turn or whenever it lands on the same square as another player. People thought that we had a good base to keep building our game from.
During play-testing some interesting […]

Game Testing Day!

We spent today with other groups from the course and helped test each other’s board games. We then gave each other feedback on them and generally discussed a lot of interesting suggestions for the games.
We had at least three different groups play our game and give us feedback on it. Most people that played it agreed that our movement system was a solid and fun core base for the game. Unfortunately we still hadn’t gotten much further than that, so […]
