First Post / Game Analysis lecture:

 

 

 

 

Hello and welcome to my new blog! This blog will cover my design work and days at Uppsala University campus Gotland. My name is Simon Strandh and i study my first year as Game designer : Graphics.

As i said this blog will be me show and writing about what i do in school and what design/game related things i do outside of school. 

Today we had a lecture with Adam (our brilliant teacher) where he talked about design, concept and pitch documents/ presentations. he also had a lecture about a one-page design. That was how to show a design in detail on one page. The lecture was really interesting but it was A LOT of information to keep track of. It is wonderful that he recorded the lecture so we can check it again if there was anything that we missed.

At the end of the lecture we got our big assignment for this course; We are going to design a concept and a game in small groups. We are only making the game in “design” so no graphics or programming will occur. The game will be a presentation and a document with our idea. The game should technically work so we need to make a prototype that can be played on paper or something like that. We have 10 weeks to finish it. The game had  to be a “Space shooter” meaning there is no gravity in the game. The twist with the game is that we get 2 random words that will be the theme of the game. We will get them on Wednesday.

I am really psyched about this assignment but i am also scared shitless. i mean come on i am going to make my first game and i have no real idea on how it works. I mean i kinda do but this is starting to happened for real.

So hat i did when i got home was that i did a google search on spaceshooters and came to an awesome website where they had a lot of space shooter games both classic and new. So i played a few and the first thing that i thought about was that i sucked at these games. Or that they are shit hard one of them at least. The second thing is that they are quite simple in its play style but that also makes it easier to make a spaceshooter unique If i kind find one good thing to change or add i will have a totally different game.

I didn’t have that much focus on analyzing the game because i kept on getting frustrated that i kept dying all the time. So finally i closed down the website and sat down and started writing this post.

But i must say that the best game i played was Xevious. It had a nice fast pace with not to much shooting and shit going on on the screen at all time. And it was fun because i always came longer and got a higher score (well most of the time) So it was giving me a carrot to keep playing ( it was also the game that i died the least times in but shhh). The only bad thing about the game was that it was hard to see the shoots the the enemies shoot at me so that killed me a few times without me noticing what killed me.
